Local cookie shop cancels reopening after Shockoe Bottom fire damaged business

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A local cookie shop has cancelled its plans for reopening after a Shockoe Bottom fire severely damaged its original location earlier this year.

Back in June, several businesses were impacted by damage from a structure fire that spread in a mixed-use building at 1700 E. Main Street.

One of the businesses, the oatmeal cream pie shop OMG OCPs, had to temporarily close, as the owner, Erin Kennedy, revealed on social media that the building was considered too dangerous to enter.

Around a month later, Kennedy announced that the shop would be relocating to a space close to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts near N. Belmont Street.

Although plans were announced, in another social post made at the end of August, Kennedy provided updates that the relocation would likely not come to fruition due to financial and equipment-based hurdles.

This led to the most recent announcement made on Tuesday, Sept. 16, where Kennedy said "now is not the right time to reopen, in any capacity," as a result of uncertainty.

"I know this isn't the outcome any of us wanted right now, but I'm not saying this is forever either, or I certainly hope not," Kennedy said in the post. "I will deeply keep hope in our country, and that one day small hospitality businesses will be able to blossom again. When that day comes, the strong roots that OMG OCPs has already established will be waiting and ready to rebloom."
