Louisa County Sheriff’s Office honors special K-9 who dies following cancer battle
LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Louisa County Sheriff's Office is honoring one of their furry friends who recently died following a battle with cancer.
According to the sheriff's office, Ally was a 7-year-old bloodhound and was also the office's most senior K-9 officer, who died on Sunday, Dec. 14, following a cancer diagnosis in October.
Throughout her time of service, the sheriff's office said Ally has worked "more than 630 calls for service, including missing persons investigations, break-ins, and public demonstrations."
She was handled by Lt. Patrick Sheridan and joined the Sheridan family as a puppy from Wychway Kennels in Buffalo, N.Y.
The bloodhound has also helped 31 jurisdictions and received various "commendations in recognition of her dedication, reliability, and extraordinary work ethic."

At just 11 months old, Ally earned her first certification with the Virginia Police Work Dog Association.
One of Ally's most significant contributions was when she was deployed at the 2022 UVA mass shooting. According to the sheriff's office, "she assisted in locating trail-confirmed evidence, including a firearm."
The K-9 was also a beloved member of the Sheridan family, and named in honor of cherished mentor of Sheridan, Anne Legge of Legacy Kennels. Her name was created by using the initials and the legacy abbreviation: AL-LY.
Outside of her career achievements, the Louisa County Sheriffs Office said, "K9 Ally was a beloved member of the Sheridan family. She found joy in running and playing, especially with her best friend, Tilly, a 14-year-old Boston Terrier. Her gentle spirit, loyalty, and boundless affection were felt by all who knew her."
Both Sheridan and his family extended their gratitude to Dr. Heather Washburn and Dr. John Cain of VCA Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center, as well as to their longtime veterinarian and dear friend, Dr. Richard Freedman for the care they provided to Ally.
"K9 Ally’s service, sacrifice, and love will never be forgotten. She followed every trail with purpose, gave voice to the lost when hope felt distant, and helped bring answers, comfort, and closure to countless families. Her legacy will forever remain etched in the heart of Louisa County."
