Man arrested after Petersburg car broken into

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Petersburg Police arrested a man in connection with a car break-in on South Adams Street.

On Wednesday, May 7, officers with the Petersburg Bureau of Police spotted Clifton Raines -- who was wanted for tampering with a vehicle and destruction of property -- in the area of South Little Church Street and Wythe Street, authorities said.

Raines reportedly fled from the officers, but eventually was arrested without incident on Clayton Street. Officers then found ecstasy and stolen property in his possession.

According to authorities, during the encounter with Raines, they received a report of a car break-in at the 100 block of South Adams Street. After investigating, Raines was identified as the suspect in that break-in.

He was charged with larceny and possession of a controlled substance. He is being held pending a court appearance.

Prior to this, Raines was previously arrested in Oct. 2022 for grand larceny, robbery, destruction of property and fleeing the law. He also faced charges in May 2024 for grand larceny and destruction of property.
