Man charged after alleged barricade shootout with Chesterfield police

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A suspect has been arrested and charged following a domestic incident involving a shootout with police on Saturday.

At 5:05 p.m. on Aug. 16, officers with the Chesterfield County Police Department were called to the 3500 block of West Hundred Road for a reported domestic with weapons call at a residence.

The woman who reported the incident told police that a man had prevented both her and her children from leaving the house and fired a gun out of a window. Both the complainant and her children were able to leave the house without further incident.

The suspect -- now identified as 37-year-old Christopher R. Wirth -- refused to leave the home and continued to remain in the house, which prompted police to shut down the roadway and secure the area, according to officials.

According to a release from Chesterfield Police, Wirth "used a rifle to fire several shots out of the house’s front window." Officers who were at the scene returned fire.

Shortly after the exchange of gunfire, Wirth exited the house and was taken into police custody.

There were no reported injuries to anyone involved in the incident, according to police.

Wirth has been arrested and charged with the following:

  • Attempted malicious wounding
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Assault on a law enforcement officer
  • Shooting a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school

This incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251.
