RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — More than 3 million Virginians have cast their ballots in the 2025 General Election and elected Democrats in the three statewide key races, according to preliminary results from the Virginia Department of Elections.
Some counties in central Virginia saw a turnout rate of over 60% this year, including Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan and Northumberland.

Gubernatorial race

Former U.S. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D) made history as the first woman to be elected governor of Virginia.
Spanberger beat her Republican opponent — current Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears — by a 13-point margin as of 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Earle-Sears was the first-ever Black woman to be chosen as the Republican Party's nominee for Virginia governor.
Lieutenant Governor race

Virginians have elected current Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D-Chesterfield) to be the first Muslim woman to serve as the state's lieutenant governor.
Hashmi won against her Republican opponent John Reid by nearly a 10-point margin as of Tuesday evening.
Reid was the first openly gay person to be nominated for a statewide office by either party in Virginia's history.
Attorney General race

Former delegate Jay Jones (D) has unseated Republican incumbent Jason Miyares to become Virginia's first Black attorney general. As of Tuesday evening, Jones had 52.2% of the vote and won by a 5-point margin.
Jones won his bid for attorney general despite the violent texts he sent during his time in the House, which generated significant controversy.
Miyares was the first Cuban American to serve in Virginia's General Assembly and the first Latino to hold statewide office in the Commonwealth. He took over the office of Virginia's attorney general in 2022.

The board is slated to certify results on Dec. 1.
