Monitor your blood pressure during American Heart Month

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — With heart disease being the leading cause of death in Virginia, health officials are urging community members to monitor blood pressure during American Heart Month this February.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the number one cause of death for Americans across the country and in Virginia. The Commonwealth saw 16,487 heart disease deaths in 2023 at a rate of 155.9 per 100,000 total population, per the agency.

“Heart disease in the central health region is slightly more prevalent than the state average," said director Alexander Samuel of the Chesterfield Health District.

High blood pressure is a huge risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Chesterfield Health District urged residents to monitor their blood pressure to prevent these health risks.

The district last year released a resource for low-income adults in Chesterfield County experiencing high blood pressure. Per officials, "My Blood Pressure, My Health" provides coaching on home blood pressure monitoring and nutrition education.

The program requires participants' commitment to monthly education, twice-monthly check-ins and tracking and reporting their blood pressure at home. Once enrolled, participants will receive a complimentary blood pressure monitor and cuff.
