More Virginia National Guardsmen will help with Hurricane Milton aftermath
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia National Guard is winding down its Hurricane Helene support in southwest Virginia to help Hurricane Milton victims in Florida. The National Guard is gathering 225 soldiers and airmen to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. They will join the four National Guardsmen and three Chesterfield County firefighters already helping out. That initial crew arrived in Florida on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and were in Tampa, Fla. on Thursday, Oct. 10 after the storm came through. The team members spent the day in a helicopter looking for people in need of rescuing. According to Chesterfield County Fire and EMS, the team didn’t need to rescue anyone, but reported seeing lots of flooding and downed trees. Now, that crew is back in Tallahassee, Fla. waiting for their next assignment. It's not clear when more Virginia National Guardsmen will head down to Florida.
