National Park Service grants will help protect nearly 150 acres of Civil War battlefields in Henrico

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Multiple Henrico County battlefields will be further protected and persevered through a National Park Service (NPS) grant worth over $340,000 combined.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) was given a total of $341,230.94 for preservation work on the Boydton Plank Battlefield and the Deep Bottom I and II Battlefields, according to a press release from NPS.

These battlefields, which span nearly 150 acres across Henrico, were important sites during the Civil War.

Here's the breakdown of how the money will be used:

  • $132,077.41 to preserve 11.72 acres of Boydton Plank Battlefield
  • $209,153.53 to complete the preservation of 138.83 acres of Deep Bottom I and II battlefields

The grants were made possible through NPS' American Battlefield Protection Program. According to the release, through this March 18 action by NPS, a total of $2.3 million was awarded for the preservation of 172 acres of Civil and Revolutionary War battlefields. The other three battlefields are located in Mississippi and Pennsylvania.
