Nearly half of staff positions are vacant at Greensville Correctional Center: state inspection

GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Over 450 staff positions were vacant at Greensville Correctional Center at the same time that the facility housed over 2,000 inmates, according to a state inspection.

The Office of the State Inspector General (OSIG) on Tuesday, Dec. 30, released a report detailing an unannounced inspection it conducted at the Greensville Correctional Center over the summer.

Greensville is a facility for male inmates in Jarratt. OSIG inspected the facility on July 25 and July 28 at 7:50 a.m.

According to the report, Greensville had 470 staff members with 463 positions vacant at the time of inspection. The facility housed 2,165 inmates during the same period.

Over the past year, 25 staff members at Greensville received disciplinary action. The report did not detail additional information on the matter.

Per the report, four serious physical assaults against staff were reported over the past three years, with three of those incidents happening in the last year.

During the same period, there were 33 serious assaults against inmates, with 14 happening in the last year.

Inmate dies after ‘apparent attack’ by another inmate at Greensville Correctional Center

The facility reported 67 inmate deaths over the past three years. Thirty-five of those deaths occurred at Greensville and the remaining were at local hospitals.

Within the past year, 11 inmate deaths occurred at the facility.

8News has reported multiple assaults against inmates at Greensville in 2025.

In late January, three correctional officers were charged with assault and battery of an inmate after two people incarcerated at the facility were hospitalized.

Most recently, an inmate died after what the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) said was an "apparent attack" by his cell partner on Nov. 11.
