New details on man arrested after daughter shot, killed in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The father of a woman killed in Richmond Sunday morning allegedly admitted to shooting her while holding his grandson, per court documents.

At about 9:52 a.m. on Sunday, May 31, the Richmond Police Department was called to an apartment in the 700 block of Harrison Street for report of an armed party.

When police arrived, they found 55-year-old Alonzo Ellis of Richmond holding both a child and a firearm, according to court documents obtained by 8News.

They also found Alonzo Ellis' daughter, 22-year-old Alicia Ellis, on the floor with a gunshot wound. She died at the scene.

Police said Alonzo Ellis told officers he shot his daughter after an argument. This incident reportedly occurred in front of the child officers found him holding, who court documents identified as his grandson.

At this time, Alonzo Ellis has been charged with shooting within an occupied dwelling and child neglect. Additional charges are pending.
