New Kent’s Grayson Torrence visits 8News to discuss ‘American Idol’ journey

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Grayson Torrence took to the "American Idol" stage this year, becoming a Top 24 finalist on the popular show. While the journey for the New Kent native ended in late April, the 21-year-old joined 8News Wednesday morning, announcing that there's new music on the way.

8News anchors Autumn Childress and Delaney Hall were joined by Torrence to discuss the wild "American Idol" experience.

"I felt like I was sleepwalking through it all," Torrence said. "But I had such an incredible time, made so many good friends, made so many good memories. I would do it 100 times over again if I could."

Torrence explained that her singing journey began when she performed at 9 years old, and told her mother she wanted to do this forever. She said she is inspired by artists like Demi Lovato, Christina Aguilera, and Billie Eilish.

"It's been so insane. I get recognized at a restaurant, the grocery store and I'm just like, 'yeah, it's me,'" Torrence said. "I think the people know me personally, because it's New Kent -- very small town, and they're like, 'I saw you on 'American Idol.'"
