‘Our Springer Family is hurting right now’: Record-breaking Highland Springs basketball coach dies
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A retired record-breaking Highland Springs boys' basketball coach died over the weekend.
George Lancaster, the former Highland Springs boys basketball coach, died nearly nine years after retiring following 37 seasons leading the program.
The morning of Sunday, Aug. 24, Harry Lee Daniel, the director of student activities at Highland Springs High School in Henrico County, posted on social media, confirming Lancaster's death and honoring his legacy.
"Our Springer Family is hurting right now! One of the most influential people in my life and he will be greatly missed," he wrote. "His impact will forever be felt and his legacy is unmatched! We are all truly blessed to have known such an amazing human being. Love you coach!"
During his career with the Springers, Lancaster has won two state championships and been inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame.
The Springers defeated Varina High School 73-60 back in 2016, marking Lancaster's 700th career victory. The milestone made him only the fourth boys' basketball coach in Virginia High School League history to win 700 career games.
