Pack your bags, not a virus: Richmond and Henrico Health District share holiday travel tips
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As the clock ticks down to the busiest travel week of the year, health officials in Central Virginia are urging families to add "health prep" to their holiday to-do lists.
The Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) released a series of guidelines this week aimed at keeping travelers safe from flu, RSV, and COVID-19 as cases rise across the Commonwealth.
Before you zip up your suitcase, RHHD Director Dr. Elaine Perry says a few simple precautions can prevent your holiday from being cut short by illness.
"Simple things like washing your hands, covering your nose and mouth when you cough and checking to make sure that you are up to date on any vaccines," she said.
Perry also noted that crowded hubs like airports or train stations are prime spots for the rapid spread of infectious diseases like measles, making up-to-date vaccinations critical for those in large groups.
If you are heading out of town, your packing strategy should include more than just clothes. RHHD suggests:
- Carry-on your meds: Keep all prescription medications in your hand luggage rather than checked bags.
- Prepare for delays: Pack enough medication for your entire trip, plus extra doses in case of travel interruptions.
- Check Advisories: If traveling abroad, monitor the latest CDC and Department of State travel advisories.
While canceling plans is difficult, Perry say its an effective way to protect others.
"You're not only impacting your health when you travel, but you're impacting the health of those around you," Perry said.
Perry advises anyone experiencing a cough, fever, or other symptoms to postpone travel and stay home to help stop the spread of disease.
