Pedestrian hit, killed by car in Powhatan

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car just after midnight on Saturday in Powhatan County.

According to Virginia State Police, at 12:07 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, a 2012 Toyota Camry was driving south on Dorset Road and 200 feet south of Genito Road, when the car struck a pedestrian standing in the southbound travel lane of Dorset Road.

At the time of the crash, the driver, who is from Amelia County, was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured, according to Virginia State Police.

The Camry driver stayed at the scene, and according to police, "alcohol was not a factor for the driver, and no charges have been placed."

The pedestrian has now been identified as 27-year-old Chance Tevin Burrell of Powhatan County. He died at the scene.

"Alcohol is thought to be a contributing factor. Next of kin was notified at the scene by investigators," state police said.

This crash remains under investigation.
