Petersburg school board approves plan to enhance all 9 schools
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- The Petersburg School Board has announced the approval of its superintendent's 2025 Capital Improvement Plan. According to Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS), superintendent Yolanda Brown's fiscal year 2025 Capital Improvement Plan was approved -- making room for improvements to all nine of its schools, as well as advancing ELA and Math curricula and efforts towards staff retention. “This is a pivotal moment for Petersburg City Public Schools,” Brown said. “I am deeply grateful to the School Board for their support and partnership in advancing real progress for our students. Their commitment to these investments reinforces that we aremoving forward—together—for a ‘New Day, New Way’ for PCPS.” The school board said that the plan shows dedication to ensuring students in Petersburg have access to enhanced learning environments, a higher quality of curriculum resources and teachers committed to investing in the success of the district. “This is an example of the School Board keeping our schools, students, teachers, and staff first,” said school board chairman Kenneth Pritchett. “We are excited to support these investments because they directly impact the success of our students and the strength of our school community. This is how we will continue to build a better future for Petersburg.” The three main priorities of the approved investments are: Improvements to All Nine Schools: The board aims to address the infrastructural needs of each school to create an enhanced school environment. Enhanced Curriculum Resources: Efforts toward strengthening instruction by providing high-quality curricula that align with the division's instructional framework and Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOL). Efforts on Staff Retention: Investing in educators and staff. Ensuring that the school system shows appreciation and can retain staff to maintain improvements that are sustainable. “Our schools must be places of inspiration and academic excellence,” Brown said. “With these investments, we are taking action to revamp our academic infrastructure, enhance teaching and learning, and support the incredible staff who make this progress possible.”
