‘Police activity’ causes significant backups on I-95 in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- “Police activity” shut down both north and southbound lanes on Interstate 95 in Richmond on Wednesday, with traffic backups still impacting drivers.

The incident, which took place on I-95 near E. Main Street, was first reported just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

As of 7:24 p.m., no lanes are closed -- but at the height of the incident, all southbound lanes and two northbound lanes in the area were closed.

There are still significant traffic backups in the area. Multiple crashes have also been reported both north and south of the crash, per VDOT.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area as first responders work to clear the scene.

No additional information, such as the nature of this “police activity,” is available as of the time of reporting.
