Powhatan Ice Den to open doors to community in June

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Grab your ball and stick -- the Powhatan Ice Den is opening its doors to the community for free and will debut in June.

After borrowing gymnasiums, the Richmond Floorball Club announced it claimed permanent floor space at the Ice Den. It will be open to the community on June 1, providing the Powhatan public access to floorball, a growing sport, according to a Friday release from the club.

“Floorball has been around this city here for years -- the interest and passion are already strong,” said Nick Baldaino, founder of Richmond Floorball Club. “With RFC, I want to give that momentum some structure so we can build something lasting. This is about creating a real foundation for the community to grow and stay connected.”

The club said the sport "ranks among the nation’s top cities in recreational floorball participation rates."

The new summer programming, which is backed by local supporters, including Play It Again Sports, Sweet Talk Strategy, Overheard RVA and 903 Creative, will officially launch their summer programing, which includes adult league nights, youth clinics and open play.

The Richmond Floorball Club will hold a public open house from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, at the Ice Den, which is located at 4345 Anderson Highway.

The event is free for all ages, and raffles, information and gear, which will be provided, will run throughout the event. Meanwhile, the club will showcase a preview of the summer season.

The club also partnered with Floorball.net to offer player discounts for those signing up for summer sessions.
