PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- As the heat wave subsides, and people are spending more time outside, Prince Edward County is providing tips to avoid bites from ticks and mosquitos.

These insects can attach to people on a trail, or even while doing work in their own backyard. The county offered the following tips to keep their summer itch-free:

  • Use U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved insect repellant on exposed skin and clothing
  • Wear long sleeves and pants in wooded or grassy areas
  • Check for ticks after spending time outdoors -- especially on kids and pets
  • Dump standing water around your home to reduce mosquito breeding
