COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — Three abandoned puppies were found in "deplorable" conditions in Colonial Heights on Easter Sunday, with authorities now trying to find those responsible.
Colonial Heights Animal Control took to social media on Thursday, April 9 to ask the community for help after three puppies were found at around 1:26 a.m. on Sunday, April 5.
They were located on the Temple Avenue bridge coming into Colonial Heights from Prince George County in conditions with clear signs of neglect. A photo of the puppies shows them closed inside a green tote with a cord wrapped around it, seemingly to keep it closed.
According to authorities, the puppies appear to be around 3 to 4 months old and are possibly a lab/hound mix. They smelled horribly as their coats were covered in feces and urine. The puppies were still "oily and filthy" even after three baths.

"They clearly had been neglected for a long time," the post read.
The three puppies were also shy and fearful and possibly had little to no human interaction before they were brought in.
"Even touching grass seemed unfamiliar to them," officials wrote.
Authorities urged anyone with information that helps identify where the puppies came from and who is responsible to reach out. Community members can call 804-520-9397 or message Colonial Heights Animal Control if they might have:
- Seen anyone posting puppies that look like these
- Recently taken in a similar puppy
- Heard anything or know anything at all
