Report: VCU expected to hire Bryant head coach Phil Martelli Jr.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- VCU is expected to hire Bryant head basketball coach Phil Martelli Jr. as its next head men's basketball coach, according to multiple national media outlets.

8Sports has reached out to VCU officials to confirm this report and is awaiting a response.

Martelli Jr., 43, in his two seasons at Bryant, has compiled a record of 43-25, leading the Bulldogs to both the American East Conference regular-season title and a tournament championship. He was also named the American East Conference Coach of the Year.

In addition to his time at Bryant, Martelli Jr. has an extensive background as an assistant coach. He has held assistant coaching positions at several institutions, including Central Connecticut, Manhattan, Niagara and Delaware.

Martelli Jr. has also coached as an assistant with the Delaware 87ers of the G-League.

According to these reports, joining him on his staff at VCU will be his father, Phil Martelli Sr., a longtime coach at St. Joseph’s.
