Richmond area stores beginning to see bare shelves as people prep for incoming winter weather
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- As people begin to gather supplies for the incoming winter weather, some stores are already seeing bare shelves.
With a weekend winter storm expected to cause widespread power outages, the National Weather Service recommends stocking up on items like batteries, pet food, baby formula, non-perishable food and water.
Maddie Harris, a mom to a two-year-old son in Manchester, was one of dozens buying groceries at the Kroger on Tim Price Way.
“I just wanted to make sure my family [and I] were prepared," Harris said. "Got, you know, water bottles in case the water turns off, Pediasure for my son in case the milk goes bad, canned meat and things like that that I normally wouldn’t get but, you know, if the power goes out.”
Inside, a few cases of water were still available late in the morning on Thursday.

But a few miles down the road at the Walmart on Midlothian Turnpike, water was almost completely gone, along with slim pickings of canned goods and the lunch meats hard to come by.

For Harris, having an electric stove is an added stress in the chance the power goes out.
“I'll say, the area I'm in kind of on southside Manchester, we just moved there, but from what I’ve heard they’re not super great with the power when it goes out so I'm a little nervous."
