Richmond celebrates renovated, ‘state-of-the-art’ Fire Station 12 with grand opening

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Richmond is celebrating the grand opening of a newly renovated, state-of-the-art fire station on W. Cary Street this June.

The Richmond Fire Department will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Fire Station 12 at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, at 2223 West Cary Street.

“This new station represents who we are and what we stand for,” said Richmond’s Interim Fire Chief, Jeffery Segal. “It’s a space that supports our firefighters while deepening our connection to the Richmond community. Bringing together history, art, and public safety in this way makes it all the more special.”

This new station reportedly marks a notable milestone for the fire department, particularly in terms of public safety and community integration. This state-of-the-art facility "blends function with artistry and honors the station's rich history," according to a release from the city.

The city said the new fire station also features the following:

  • Two apparatus bays for fire equipment.
  • One bay for an administrative vehicle.
  • Fitness room for enhanced firefighter well-being and improved readiness.
  • A dayroom for rehab and modern kitchen.
  • A community room designated for neighborhood meetings and public events.

Fire Station 12 previously underwent a complete demolition of the previous structure and construction of a modern fire station that is "highly functional," as per the city.

In 2024, the fire station received the 2024 Honor Award at the Fire Industry Education and Resource Organization’s annual Fire Station Design Awards Program.

The city said that Fire Station 12 serves as a "cultural landmark featuring public art created by local and visiting artists," with works commissioned through the City’s Public Art Commission (PAC) that showcase the fire department's heritage.

The commission was established to administer Richmond’s Public Art Program.

This marks one of many newly renovated fire stations in the area, including Hanover County, Henrico County and Chesterfield County.
