Richmond Fire Department celebrates Fire Prevention Week with events, safety tips

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Fire Department is joining agencies nationwide to raise awareness on fire prevention for National Fire Prevention Week by providing safety tips and community events. According to Richmond Fire, National Fire Prevention Week takes place from Sunday, Oct. 6, through Saturday, Oct. 12, and focuses on this year's theme, "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!" Residents are encouraged to make smoke alarms work for them by following these safety tips provided by Richmond Fire: Install smoke alarms in key areas: Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including basements. Smoke alarms should be placed high on walls or ceilings, as smoke rises. Test your smoke alarms monthly: Press the test button on your smoke alarms every month to make sure they are working properly and replace batteries if they don’t respond when tested. Replace old smoke alarms: Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. Be sure to check the manufacture date on the back of the alarm to see if it is time for a replacement. “Fire Prevention Week serves as a vital reminder that safety begins with awareness,” Richmond Fire Chief Melvin D. Carter said in a statement. “A working smoke alarm is your first line of defense against a fire and every small action—installing and regularly checking smoke alarms, creating escape plans, and practicing fire safety—can save lives.” Richmond Fire stations have also organized a series of community events throughout the week to amplify the importance of smoke alarms and fire safety.
