POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Floorball Club held the second day of the first-ever Atlantic Floorball Open with USA Floorball on Sunday morning.

The event was held at 10 a.m. on both Saturday, Aug. 23, and Sunday, Aug. 24, in partnership with USA Floorball, at the Powhatan Ice Den, located at 1580 Oakbridge Terrace.

According to a release, it’s the first time their national staff will lead multiple clinics in Virginia, as well as the first time Richmond hosts a tournament of this scope.

"The competition is great. It's a lot fun," said Case Connor, US Men’s U-19 Coach. It's super relaxed and just an easy way to go out, get some exercise, have a good time and try something new."

Connor said they hope to host another event similar to this year's floorball open in 2026, but he told 8News that "it's not set in stone yet on [a] certain date, but we are hoping to have another similar -- a tournament and a development camp as well."

Earlier this month, Nick Baldaino, the president and founder of the Richmond Floorball Club, emphasized floorball's rapid growth in the country, and said "USA Floorball has been quietly doing the work."

“We’ve built something special here,” Baldaino told 8News earlier in August. “Now we’re giving it the structure it deserves — coaching, rules, player development. This weekend’s about making that next leap, together.”

Baldaino said the opening of the Powhatan Ice Den back in June led to quick growth, with 70 weekly players and more than 2,500 unique monthly viewers on its website. He added that the event also gained the attention of the USA Floorball Association.

The Ice Den provides the Powhatan community access to floorball, a growing sport, according to a May release from the club.

"There's a lot of beginners here [who] started," Connor said Sunday morning. "Some of these guys started today, as their first time ever. It's a super-easy thing to get into. It's a lot of fun, and it can be a great time."
