Richmond provides warming spaces as temperatures drop

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The city of Richmond is offering residents in need several places to stay warm and safe as temperatures drop this winter season.

The Salvation Army Cold Weather Shelter is open from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. from Nov. 15 until April 15. It's located at 1900 Chamberlayne Parkway with an entrance in the side alley.

Its hours may be extended past 8 a.m. if:

  • Temperatures are 40 degrees or below
  • There is freezing rain or snow greater than 1 inch over a 24-hour period

This shelter serves adult men and women, not families. It includes the following amenities:

  • Heated indoor space
  • Restrooms
  • Seating
  • Light snacks and beverages
  • Dinner
  • ADA-accessible areas
  • Hygiene kits
  • Weekly health services van
  • Mobile showers twice monthly
  • Bed bug treatment
  • Onsite security

The extended hours schedule for the shelter over the holidays is as follows:

  • Wednesday, Dec. 31 -- closes at noon
  • Thursday, Jan. 1 -- closes at 1 p.m.

During the daytime, all branches of Richmond Public Library serve as warming spaces during standard business hours, which can be found here.

  • East End -- 1200 N. 25th Street
  • Ginter Park -- 1200 Westbrook Avenue

  • North Avenue -- 2901 North Avenue
  • West End -- 5420 Patterson Avenue
  • Westover Hills -- 1408 Westover Hills Boulevard
