Richmond raises towing fee limits: What drivers need to know

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond City Council approved an ordinance to raise the limits on towing fees for vehicles that are removed from private property during a meeting on Monday.

The ordinance, effective immediately, raises the towing fee limit for vehicles under 10,000 pounds from $135 to $195.

Maximum storage fees have also increased from $45 to $50 per 24-hour period. However, the first 24 hours will be free and no charge can be added for any period in which the towing and recovery business is closed.

The ordinance will also allow additional towing fees that will occur per occurrence -- not per day -- including:

  • Up to $30 for towing between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m.
  • Up to $30 for towing on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays

The administrative fee limit has also increased from $50 to $75. This fee can only be charged after a vehicle has been left in the tow lot for over 72 hours.
