Richmond Renfaire to empower those with societal expectations at ‘Warriors in Bloom’

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Renfaire crew will host another renfaire-style event this summer to empower those who are faced with societal expectations.

According to an announcement, "Warriors in Bloom" will take place from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Agecroft Hall and Gardens, and aims to celebrate "bold figures who dared to defy conventions."

Virago Valley, the non-profit organization that runs the faire, aims to showcase history at the Agecroft Hall and Gardens with over 50 local vendors. The celebration seeks to reclaim the word "virago" to invite people to feel empowered despite societal expectations.

"A virago is traditionally a woman who leads, who resists, who dares," the announcement reads. "This event is not just a tribute, but a declaration of identity to honor viragos past and inspire those yet to come."

Tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 30, coinciding with Joan of Arc Day.

"Warriors in Bloom" will also include the following:

  • Youth crafting activities
  • Performances by groups such as All The Saints Theater Company, Eli Owens, Coalition Theater, Spooky Hollow Storytellers, Gusher and more.
  • Combat demonstrations conducted by local historical martial arts guilds
  • Historical reenactments
  • Artisan demonstrations

The event is set to highlight figures like Joan of Arc, Tomyris, Lagertha, The Dahomey Amazons, Boudica, Rani Durgavati and the fierce pirate duo Anne Bonny and Mary Read.

All proceeds will support the development of the 2026 initiative.
