Richmond under State of Emergency ahead of winter weather, Avula says
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond Mayor Danny Avula has announced that the city is under a state of emergency due to continued icy conditions and the impact of winter weather expected to move through this weekend.
In a Friday, Jan. 30 release, residents were urged to check the city's webpage designated to winter weather as well as their social media for operations updates.
Those seeking housing needs can check the following options:
- Salvation Army Inclement Weather Shelter, located at 1900 Chamberlayne Ave., operates nightly from Nov. 15 to April 15.
- CARITAS Surge Shelter, operational once the Salvation Army shelter has reached capacity and when the temperature is below 40 degrees
- City Emergency Shelters, located at Southside Community Center (6255 Old Warwick Road), activated under extraordinary conditions like an active storm or threats of widespread power outages
Residents can also contact the Greater Richmond Continuum of Care Homeless Connection Line at 804-972-0813, which helps connect people to shelter, outreach and supportive resources.
