RPD speed camera numbers show over 40,000 citations so far in 2025
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond’s latest speed camera numbers show drivers have been caught speeding in school zones more than 40,000 times this year.
According to the Richmond Police Department (RPD), the Safety Camera Program has issued 40,724 citations to drivers caught violating traffic laws, receiving $1,377,996 in fines for the City of Richmond from Jan. 1 through May 20 in 2025.
As of May 20, however, $1,041,450 in fines remain unpaid.
City officials said that registered vehicle owners have 30 days from the date of citation to pay their fines. This built-in payment window naturally creates a lag between when tickets are issued and when payments are received.
Additionally, all citations are eligible to be contested in court, which can further delay the collection of fines.
David Easterling, who drives by Huguenot High School for work, said he's noticed speeding has diminished there since the program started.
“There's really no point in speeding even if you're late,” Easterling said. “I used to see just packs of people going 40 or 50 miles an hour when it was just 35 miles an hour, let alone during school hours when it was for just 25 (mph).”
Easterling said his job as a nurse shows why drivers should abide by the laws for their safety and others.
“I work on a spinal cord injury unit, so I've seen the results of multiple accidents,” Easterling said.. “Whether it be from red light running from speed involved accidents, I deal with the rehabilitation and recovery of individuals on a day-to-day basis.”
City officials said the cameras are active in school zones during arrival and dismissal times. but drivers should always slow down when children are around.
Since the start of the Safety Camera Program in March of 2024, $1,963,376 of fines have been received.
City officials urged all motorists to slow down in school zones during arrival and dismissal times when children are present.
