South Hill man to serve 20 years for deadly shooting of wife in 2024

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A South Hill man will serve 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in connection with the deadly shooting of his wife in Mecklenburg's South Hill area in February 2024.

On Friday, July 25, the South Hill Police Department announced that 69-year-old Douglas Hinman was sentenced to 70 years in prison, with 50 years suspended, after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, malicious wounding and discharging a firearm within a building.

At 7:19 p.m. on Feb. 18, 2024, officers with the South Hill Police Department responded to a 911 call in the 1000 block of Green Hill Road reporting a person being held at gunpoint and gunshots fired.

When officers arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds.

76-year-old Jackie Hinman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to South Hill Police.

Her husband, Douglas Hinman, was taken to a Richmond-area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

After a thorough investigation, police determined that the incident was a case of murder and attempted suicide.
