Spanberger, Hashmi, Miyares hold cash on hand advantages with early voting set to begin on Friday
RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) -- New campaign finance reports are giving us a glimpse into where things stand just days before early voting begins in Virginia.
In the race for governor, Democratic gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger has $12.2 million on hand. That’s compared to her Republican opponent, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who has just under $5 million to spend in the campaign’s final weeks.
“Having that advantage means you can just make sure there's not a single voter in the Commonwealth who hasn't at least heard your name and gotten some kind of message from you,” Randolph-Macon Political Science Professor Rich Meagher told 8News.
Meanwhile, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, Ghazala Hashmi, holds a cash-on-hand advantage of about $1.9 million over her Republican opponent, John Reid.
“I think John Reid is not gonna be happy about his fundraising totals, but I think he’s trying a different approach," Meagher said. "I don’t think that Reid or his campaign [has] ever thought that the big money’s gonna roll in. I think he’s trying to work his grassroots connections."
In the race for attorney general, although Democrat Jay Jones outraised Jason Miyares, his Republican opponent, Miyares still holds a nearly $3.5 million cash-on-hand advantage.
“Some people, and some powerful people with a big checkbook, believe that Miyares has a good, strong position here,” Meagher told 8News.
Early voting begins on Friday, Sept. 19, at your local registrar’s office.
