StormTracker8: Powerful coastal storm impacts central Virginia this weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – We're starting today with overcast skies, and we won't get rid of them the entire weekend. Highs will be in the upper 60s this afternoon, with showers beginning later today. Isolated sprinkles are possible through 2pm, then rain chances will slowly rise into the evening and overnight hours.

Overnight and tomorrow, widespread rain is expected across Central Virginia from the low pressure system moving north along the coast. Prepare for rain all day, avoid outdoor activities, and be especially careful while driving.

Rainfall totals could be near 3 inches for those east of I-95, 1-2 inches along 95, and those further west will be seeing half an inch to an inch of rain. These are estimated and localized higher amount are possible. We could see a daily high rainfall record broken for some towns.

We have coastal flood warnings in place for all of our coastal counties.

We will also be dealing with gusty winds across the region. Coastal areas could see wind gusts over 30mph. Central VA will be seeing 20-30mph for Sunday. Secure loose outdoor items or bring them inside for the day.

Conditions will slowly improve Sunday night. Showers are possible Monday and rain chances will end Monday Night. Tuesday will be nicer, with highs near 70° and partly cloudy skies. The end of next week is looking really nice, with a cold front dropping our temperatures and again bringing us to the 60s for highs and 40s for lows.

TRACKING THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Jerry continues North out in the Atlantic and will soon turn East, back away from the U.S.

There is a new area of interest off the coast of Africa that is of no concern for us.
