StormTracker8: Weekend Winter Storm to bring Snow and Ice
Richmond, Va (WRIC) -- We have new updates on the Winter Storm arriving this weekend.
The frontal boundary tomorrow will usher in arctic air and pave the way for the next weather system to bring us winter weather. Saturday will be cold, with highs in the 20s and lows in the teens. Snow will begin Saturday late afternoon, and we are all expected to begin with snow only as precipitation. On Saturday night into Sunday morning, a layer of air in the atmosphere is expected to warm. This will cause precipitation to switch over to a wintry mix and then, most likely freezing rain all day Sunday.
This will cause ice accumulations on branches, roads, and power lines. Power outages are looking more and more likely.
Snow totals and ice accumulation totals remain unknown. We are nearing the 72 hours out window from the arrival of the storm, so details will become more solid over the next day and a half.
Monday morning, precipitation will wrap. The problem is, temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing until the end of next week. Snow and ice will not melt quickly. This could spell significant disruptions at least through the start of next week, potentially beyond.
Prepare now for an ice storm this weekend. Remember generator safety, fill you car's tank, and get necessities from the grocery store if necessary.
Tonight and tomorrow will actually be fairly nice. Lows will be above freezing for many, and tomorrow afternoon will be gorgeous, with highs in the 50s. Soak in the calm before the storm.
