Students to explore Richmond’s wayfinding in navigation, safety field trip

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Open High School students are exploring the downtown City of Richmond on Wednesday morning during an educational field trip, focusing on wayfinding, navigation, pedestrian safety and urban exploration.

About 30 students will walk from Open High School in Oregon Hill to City Hall, and will culminate at Richmond City Hall's observation desk from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9.

According to a release from the city on Tuesday, April 9, the event will see students observing and analyzing the city's layout, public art and infrastructure. They will also have a scavenger hunt, and urban boutiques, entrepreneurs and businesses have donated prizes.

“This field trip is a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about their city in a hands-on, engaging way,” said Edward Ingold, teacher at Open High School. “We want to empower them with the skills to navigate their city safely and confidently, while also fostering an appreciation for Richmond’s history and vibrant community.”

The event will also include appearances from community members who will "share perspectives on Richmond's development," according to the city and participation from local muralists and graffiti artists, as well as Richmond's Department of Public Works, the Vision Zero team and business owners.

“We are grateful for the support of our community partners, including the City of Richmond, local businesses, and artists, who are helping to make this event a success,” added Ross Catrow Director of Strategic Communications.
