Traffic index for 2025 shows increase in rush hour congestion in Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond's traffic index for 2025 showed higher rush‑hour congestion and longer travel times compared with 2024.
Data from TomTom showed Richmond's traffic index for 2025, highlighting the average congestion levels, travel times and rush‑hour speeds.
On average, time lost from rush hour traffic was 53 hours, which is two days and five hours. This is 12 hours and 20 minutes more than in 2024.
The average congestion level increased to 23.6% in 2025. The average travel time for a six-mile drive rose by more than 15 seconds in a year to 11 minutes and 57 seconds.
However, the average distance driven in 15 minutes decreased to 7.5 miles, down 0.2 miles from 2024. The average rush-hour speed decreased to 25.4 mph, and the speed on the highways slowed down to 52.7 mph.
The worst day to travel was Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, with an average of 96% in congestion levels at 6 p.m., and drivers traveling four miles in 15 minutes.
During morning rush hour in Richmond, the average time and speed to travel 10 miles was 21 minutes and 19 seconds at 28.1 mph.
For evening rush hour, the average time and speed to travel 10 miles is 25 minutes and 41 seconds at 23.4 mph.
