Tips for smooth-running AC, all summer long

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- If you want to stay cool this summer, HVAC service experts say preventative maintenance is key.
Issues with an AC unit could start inside the home.
Matt Rhea from Bradley Mechanical said some easy habits can help you avoid bigger breakdowns.

"Make sure you’re staying on top of your air filters, and you’re checking them monthly," Rhea said. "My rule of thumb is to check it every time you were to write your power bill or pay your power bill, go ahead and check your air filter.”
On especially hot days, Rhea said customers can feel like their AC unit isn't keeping up.
But, he said, that doesn't mean there is a mechanical issue.
“The manufacturers really only design them for a 20 degree difference from the outdoor temperatures. So, if its 100 outside, and your system is maintaining 76 or 78, it’s doing a pretty decent job," Rhea said.
If you want your home at a cooler temperature, Rhea recommends you "set it and forget it," rather than having your AC system run on a schedule.
