Tractor-trailer fires at Gilmerton Bridge cause major delays

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) -- A multi-vehicle accident caused major delays at the Gilmerton Bridge Tuesday morning.

According to officials, both directions of the Gilmerton Bridge were closed due to multiple tractor-trailer fires in the area. The Chesapeake Fire Department was dispatched to the scene around 3:50 a.m. and find two tractor-trailers involved in an accident — both of which were on fire at the time.

As of noon, just the south left shoulder and left lane remain closed at the Gilmerton Bridge.

Fire crews worked to ensure all individuals involved were out of the vehicles and said that no injuries were reported.

Motorists are urged to use an alternate route while crews work to clear the scene.

The cause of the accident and fire remain under investigation.
