Two teachers injured while trying to break up fight between students at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Two teachers were injured when they tried to break up a fight between students at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center earlier in May.

The Bon Air facility is located in Chesterfield County and houses youth ranging from about 14 to 20 years old who have been committed by the juvenile court for crimes ranging from misdemeanors to felonies. It’s the state’s only facility for housing convicted youth.

According to a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, last week, two teachers reportedly fell while trying to break up a fight between students in a classroom.

The incident was first reported by VPM on May 9.

The department said the teachers' injuries appeared minor, and out of an abundance of caution, they were taken to the hospital to be assessed.

Other classes were not impacted, according to the department. School is scheduled for a half day each Wednesday to accommodate treatment teams. Facility operations reportedly continued as normal.

The spokesperson said that the department is investigating the altercation, which involved "a small number" of students and is "suspected of being gang related."

This incident follows the announcement by the Virginia Office of the State Inspector General that it will carry out a special review of the facility following a letter by the Commission on Youth urging for an investigation.
