VBPD: Two officers dead after traffic stop Friday night
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- Two Virginia Beach Police officers are dead after being shot during traffic stop Friday night.
VBPD was conducting the stop at 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway and Wendfield Drive in Green Run according to a police spokesperson.
"We are unable to share much information at this time as this is still very much an active investigation," the department wrote on its Facebook page. "However, we want to assure the community that there is no active threat."
A press conference has been scheduled with Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate and Mayor Bobby Dyer at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. We plan on providing a live stream on this page.
This is the first shooting death of a Virginia Beach Police officer since 2008 according to data from the Virginia Beach Police Foundation.
It is the first time since 1979 that Virginia Beach lost two officers in one incident.
