VEC announces pandemic unemployment backlogs cleared out for first time in years
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) has announced that its pandemic-related unemployment backlogs have been cleared. Governor Glenn Youngkin congratulated the commission in a press release on Jan. 13. "VEC is a stronger, more responsive agency for the 8.8 million customers who depend on us," Youngkin said. In June 2024, 8News reported that the VEC still had 5,600 claims left to be filed. However, a spokesperson with the commission said that, as of today, there are zero. When asked how they accomplished this goal, here is what VEC had to say: "We accomplished this goal by streamlining processes, implementing efficient workflows and leveraging technology such as Robotic Process Automation. We believe these enhancements have made VEC a more resilient and future-ready agency." Since 2022, the VEC has completed over 135,000 appeals -- with 65,000 being completed in the last year. The agency has recently partnered with ID.me, a digital identity verification tool, which, according to the governor's office, has made it easier and faster for customers to file for unemployment benefits.
