Verizon celebrates 10 years of STEM innovation at VSU student showcase
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Verizon is marking a major milestone at Virginia State University (VSU), inviting the public to witness the future of tech-driven innovation during its student showcase for the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program.
The free event, from 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, at VSU's Multipurpose Center, will highlight the achievements of local middle schoolers who spent the past three weeks working on emerging technologies -- from augmented reality to robotics.
This year's event carries special significance as the program celebrates its 10th anniversary. Since its launch, the program has empowered thousands of students across 26 states, offering hands-on experience with digital tools and problem-solving. The program, held at 44 college campuses across the country, is part of Verizon's broader commitment to equip 10 million kids with digital skills training by 2030.
Students will even get to walk the red carpet as they arrive to present their final projects.
“The students made me feel that I was making an impact with every student, every single day. Being able to see them grow—as scientists, computer scientists, as men—was absolutely lovely. I think all of those kids are gonna grow up to be outstanding. I think that that’s really important for anyone, just to have somebody to look up to and to help you improve. And it just becomes a chain reaction of learning and growth and positivity. I think I was able to become a better person just by being around these amazing students.” Shyriq McShan, VSU program mentor
The showcase is open to the public and media, offering a firsthand look at how Verizon is helping shape the next generation of innovators.
