RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Several Virginia leaders took to social media on Sunday, releasing statements in response to the death of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100. Governor Glenn Youngkin posted on the social media platform X about processing the news alongside his wife: "Suzanne and I join our nation to mourn the passing of Jimmy Carter, a devoted public servant and 39th President. He served our country in the Navy, as a Georgia state senator, and as the Governor of Georgia. We are praying for the Carter family during this difficult time. His faith was always inspiring to others, may he rest in peace." -- Gov. Youngkin Former Governor of Virginia Terry McAuliffe credited Carter with helping him at the beginning of his political career: "My first job in politics was for President Carter 45 years ago. It’s been an honor and a privilege to know such a hardworking, decent, honorable man who led with his heart. RIP to one of the greatest." -- Terry McAuliffe Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears spoke in detail about Carter's time in office and the causes he pursued: "We pray for the peace of the Lord to be with former President Jimmy Carter and his family. We are deeply grateful for his years of sacrifice, including his tireless work building homes through Habitat for Humanity and his dedication to supporting the incarcerated.
