Virginia Poison Center warns of medication side effects that worsen heat sensitivity

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Central Virginia is feeling the heat this week, prompting the Virginia Poison Center to warn people about the effects certain medications can have on the body while out in the sun.

According to the center, a common side effect of several medications is photosensitivity -- or increased skin sensitivity to UV radiation. People can combat this by wearing sunscreen, solar protective clothing and avoiding long-term sun exposure.

Certain medications can also cause the body to be more sensitive to heat in general. The center urged people to be aware of the side effects of their medications and stay hydrated.

LIST: Beat the heat with these cooling stations in the Richmond region

The center provided the following symptoms to be on the look out for, noting that prevention is the best course of action when trying to avoid heat exhaustion:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Excessive sweating
  • Skin rash
  • Swelling
  • Pale in color
