Petersburg mother, 11-year-old brother charged after 6-year-old girl shot, killed
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- A Petersburg mother and her 11-year-old son are facing charges after police say the boy shot his 6-year-old sister, killing her.
Just before 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, officers with the Petersburg Bureau of Police were called to the 2300 block of Navajo Court for report of a person shot.
When they arrived, they found a 6-year-old girl with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.
Two weeks later, on Tuesday, March 24, police announced that two arrests were made in connection with this incident: an 11-year-old boy and 30-year-old Natalie Joyce Burford.

The 11-year-old boy is facing a manslaughter charge. Burford, who police said is the mother of both the 11-year-old suspect and the 6-year-old victim, was hit with three counts of child neglect, one count of leaving a loaded firearm accessible and one count of child endangerment.

Burford will next appear in court on June 18.
