What Thanksgiving foods can you give your dog?
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- When you get those puppy-dog eyes, it's hard to say "no," but before you give in, double-check that the Thanksgiving Day foods your feeding your dog are safe for them to eat.
According to the American Kennel Club, there are some foods on your Thanksgiving dinner plate that can be toxic to your canine companion. Here's a list of foods that are safe for dogs to eat:
- Turkey meat -- without bones or skin, since certain butter- and oil-based cooking can cause painful and dangerous pancreatitis or other digestive issues for dogs
- Potatoes -- boiled or baked, not mashed
- Apples -- avoid the core, and no apple pie
- Green beans -- ideally, without butter or salt
- Peas -- no creamed peas or casserole
- Pumpkin -- no pumpkin pie or pre-spiced puree
Other foods to avoid feeding dogs include:
- Gravy
- Stuffing
- Casseroles
- Chocolate, cookies, pies and sweets -- "sugar-free" dishes can include sugar substitutes that are fatal for dogs
- Alcoholic beverages
- Raisins and grapes
- Onions, scallions and garlic
- Ham
- Yeast dough
- Fatty foods
- Foods containing spices
Make sure trash are secured to prevent dogs from accessing food scraps. In the event of an emergency, call the Pet Poison Helpline or your local emergency veterinarian.
