‘Deeply disturbing’: Caroline property owner finds dead man, case deemed a homicide

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Caroline County property owner discovered a dead man on their land on Friday, with the "deeply disturbing" case now being investigated as a homicide.

On Friday, March 27, deputies with the Caroline County Sheriff's Office were sent to the area of Bagby and Mt. Cloud roads after a caller reported finding what they believed to be a body on their property.

"The caller, understandably shaken, did not approach the individual and immediately contacted 911," the sheriff's office said.

When deputies arrived, they confirmed that the caller had indeed found a deceased person -- an unidentified man -- and immediately began to collect forensic evidence.

“This is a deeply disturbing case," said Caroline County Sheriff Scott Moser. "The scene our deputies and investigators encountered was difficult, but they remained focused and professional from the moment they arrived. We are committed to ensuring that whoever is responsible is brought to justice. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim this evening.”

The sheriff's office could not share many details about this case at this time, including the identity of the man who was killed. Authorities are working with the medical examiner to identify him and to locate his family.

However, authorities did confirm that his death is being investigated as a homicide, as foul play is thought to be involved.

"Based on the information available at this time, investigators do not believe this to be a random incident," the sheriff's office said.
