What to know about extreme cold warnings and cold weather advisories

(WRIC) — As we head into the winter months of 2024-25 across Central Virginia, there are some new weather alerts to be mindful of when it comes to cold weather: an extreme cold warning and a cold weather advisory. These two weather alerts replace the previous wind chill warnings and wind chill advisories. An extreme cold warning is issued when there are dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chill values that are expected to happen or are occurring right now. The best thing to do in this situation is to just stay indoors. Now, of course, not everyone can be indoors all the time -- especially when they must go to work. for instance -- so before you head outdoors during an extreme cold warning, dress very warmly from head to toe and cover every inch of your skin. It is also a great idea to make someone else aware of your whereabouts in these extreme conditions.
