‘Your mom would be so proud’: Son of Chesterfield firefighter who tragically died in 2022 graduates high school

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The son of a firefighter who died in 2022 celebrated his high school graduation with other members from Chesterfield Fire and EMS.

Talan Monahan received his diploma from Cosby High School in Midlothian on Wednesday, May 21, with the support of firefighters from his mother's division.

"Congratulations Talan!" a social post from Chesterfield Fire and EMS reads. "We know your mom would be so proud. We were honored to be there today to support you on your graduation day."

Alicia Monahan died on June 26, 2022, while teaching an off-duty swift water rescue course on the Nantahala River in North Carolina. She was part of the Clover Hill Fire Station, serving Chesterfield Fire for over 11 years. She was also an experienced member of the department's SCUBA Rescue Team. In August 2024, her name was added to the Commonwealth Public Safety Memorial in recognition of her service.
