18-year-old shot, killed outside Richmond apartment complex during party

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Police Department is investigating after an 18-year-old was shot and killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the city's North Side on Saturday morning.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 1, officers were called to an apartment complex located at the corner of West Bacon Street and Hickory Street for a reported noise complaint.

At 3:24 a.m., while still on the scene, officers heard gunfire in the apartment building's parking lot. According to police, many people who had been gathered there fled the area.

Officers entered the parking lot and found a man -- identified as 18-year-old Edguin Zelaya-Mendez, of Alexandria -- down and unresponsive next to a parked vehicle. Police said he had an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
