19-year-old charged after vehicle pursuit beginning in New Kent County turns into foot chase in Charles City County
NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 19-year-old man has been charged after a vehicle pursuit by the New Kent County Sheriff's Office turned into a foot chase in Charles City County early Sunday morning.
At around 1 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, a deputy with the New Kent County Sheriff's Office was monitoring vehicle speeds through radar in the 5000 block of Pocahontas Trail when he reportedly saw two vehicles speeding.
The deputy checked his radar and saw that the vehicles reached 99 mph in a posted 55 mph zone, according to the sheriff's office.
The deputy then turned on his emergency equipment and tried to pull over both vehicles, but one of them, a maroon Nissan, did not stop and continued speeding, reportedly reaching more than 115 mph.
The sheriff's office said the deputy chased the Nissan, which continued east on Pocahontas Trail. The Nissan then turned onto Adkins Road and entered Charles City County, continuing to speed.
Throughout the pursuit, officials said the suspect turned off the vehicle's headlights and taillights and drove on the wrong side of the road. Eventually, the vehicle turned onto Lott Carry Road and stopped in its 9000 block.
Officials said the driver then reportedly fled on foot for a short distance before New Kent sheriff's deputies apprehended him without further incident.
The driver of the Nissan was identified by officials as 19-year-old Cosey Quishaun Robinson of the Providence Forge area of Charles City County.
After the pursuit ended, deputies reportedly found "suspected marijuana" and alcohol inside of Robinson's vehicle.
Robinson faces the following charges, according to the sheriff's office:
- Racing
- Reckless driving by speeding
- Felony eluding
- Underage possession of alcohol
- Underage possession of marijuana
The driver of the second vehicle involved in the beginning of the incident is still under investigation, and charges are pending, the sheriff's office said.
